Earth Hour
What were you doing between 7.30-8.30pm last night? I was having dinner by candlelight at my place with friends as we participated in Earth Hour.
Here are two photos taken by Mike Bowers from SMH showing the bridge at 7pm and then again at 7.45pm. More photos are available here
So what was the point?
The aim was to draw attention to simple ways of fighting global warming. According to the website: 'It's a simple action if everyone takes part, sending a powerful message that we care about the future of the planet.' Across Sydney households, businesses and government departments turned off their lights for an hour in the launch of an ongoing campaign aimed at reducing Sydney's greenhouse gas emissions by 5% in 2007. The Coca-Cola sign in Kings Cross was turned off for the first time since it was installed in 1974!

Have the two photos been exposed differently to accentuate the difference? Or were the remaining lights on the bridge (and street lights below) dimmed during the hour?
And thanks for dinner!

I was amazed how quiet King Street Newtown became for that hour.

According to this report:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/lights-on-lights-off/2007/04/01/1175366081038.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1
the lights on the bridge were turned off.
I was struck by the observation that in the 'city centre alone energy consumption fell 10.2 per cent between 7.30pm and 8.30pm, saving 24.86 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the air'
Not a solution, but a great way of raising awareness and hopefully helpful in reminding people to switch off unnecessary lights and take appliances off standby.

I registered for Earth Hour, and was probably going to attempt something very old-fashioned like crocheting by candlelight, but then I ran into friends Lewis and Jenny in the park and ended up there for dinner and candlelit conversation. We did actually go outside with binoculars, Lewis being the astronomer he once was, thinking the star gazing conditions in Sydney might have improved with some lights out - but that was being just a little optimistic!
P.S. I only made a typo, so deleted my own comment - now that know how.
